I would like to hear from other rodbuilders about the how, when or where of replacing a custom rod, that you think is questionable.... I just had a incident where I was told the rod broke when bringing in a fish....come to find out it was a splintered break, which meant the rod was crushed in some manner... I replaced this rod on the man's word, it took me a year to get the original rod back...if I had seen it first I would have nevered replaced it.!! I will never do this again.... either bring me the original rod...or it does not get replaced until I see it !! This was a Benchmark rodblank...I only had two break in seven years....one had a roddoor slammed on it...the other by a angry ex-husband !!
Yeah, live & learn. Just like big boys, we custom builders need to spell out our warranty in writing and stick to it. I had 2 blank failures with the same customer but fortunatly for me the customer supplied both blanks and my written warranty specificly stated that the blank is only covered by the manufacture's warranty if any. As this client ordered 8 rods over a short time period I did give him a break and rebuilt them at a reduced labor charge and the MFGR replaced the blanks.
I have the ability to hang out occasionally with one of the best commercial rod manufacturers in Texas. They sell lots of rods, so naturally they get lots of returns. Just about every time I'm there a couple of rods come in via mail, and almost every rod say's "I just want to say that this is the best rod i've ever owned and love it very much, but unfortunately while I was setting the hook on a 12" trout it just broke." The 12" trout story accounts for 80% of their returns and some of the rods are just destroyed, looking like a very pissed off pitbull got hold of them. Although some customers are honest and tell the truth that a car door or tail gate did it, most are not. I'm not good enough to sell my rods so I give them away to friends and family so I dont have to deal with this, but those of you that do really need a good return policy written somewhere. Thought yall would enjoy the 12" trout story, it's amazing dishonest people seem to think alike ha ha. John
